About Us

#IAMSUGARFREE

#iamsugarfree is a social media campaign facilitated by us at Oakleaf Pharmaceuticals which aims to promote a healthier lifestyle independent of excessive intake of refined sugars. All our products are sugar-free and we believe that they are a perfect alternative to the consumption of sodas and fizzy drinks. These drinks are one of the major sources by which refined sugars are introduced into the body. The rationale is if you can reduce the intake of these sodas by substituting them with Calgovit products which are healthier, achieving health goals (e.g weight loss, diabetes e.t.c) will be easier.

What is a sugar-free diet?

Sugar free diet is any healthy diet that contains no ADDED sugar or a substance that its end product is sugar (that is, glucose). However since the body requires glucose to perform its normal functions, it is necessary but should be consumed in limited quantities. Some fruits that have high sugar content like pineapples should also be avoided.

WHY SUGAR-FREE DIET

Sugar is one of the most addictive substances on the planet and that addiction kills more people than tobacco every year. A lot of the foods we eat today are stuffed with "hidden" sugar, not just in fizzy drinks and doughnuts, but sauces, cereals, fruit juices and other processed foods. A Sugar free diet is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy and a good lifestyle.

WHAT IS SUGAR?

Sugar is a natural ingredient that has been part of our diet for thousands of years. Sugars are carbohydrates that provide energy for the body. The most common sugar in the body is glucose which your brain, major organs and muscles need to function properly. Some sugars are found naturally in foods (e.g. fruit, vegetables and milk) while others are used during processing and cooking. The body does not distinguish between the different types of sugar and breaks them down in exactly the same way. For example, the sucrose in an apple is broken down in exactly the same way as the sucrose in your sugar bowl.

SUGAR AND YOUR BODY
  1. IMMUNE SYSTEM - One of the reasons for maintaining a sugar free diet is a better immune system and reduction in risk of illnesses. Sugar suppresses our immune system. Consuming foods with high sugar content suppresses the immune system by 75% or more for four to six hours. This is because; sugar competes with Vitamin C (which is an immune system booster). The more sugar in your system, the less the Vitamin C in your white blood cells and sugar does not aid the immune system in fighting invaders/infections.

  2. WEIGHT - Your body uses sugar to survive, and burns sugar to provide you with the energy necessary for life. Many truly healthy foods are actually broken down to sugar in the body –In additions to the breakdown products of fat and protein, glucose is a great energy source for your body. However, there are two ways that sugar can sabotage your body and cause fat storage. Excess glucose is the first problem, and it involves a very simple concept. Anytime you have filled your body with more fuel than it actually needs (and this is very easy to do when eating foods with high sugar content), your liver’s sugar storage capacity is exceeded. When the liver is maximally full, the excess sugar is converted by the liver into fatty acids and returned to the bloodstream, where is taken throughout your body and stored .wherever you tend to store adipose fat cells, including, but not limited to, the popular regions of the stomach, hips, butt, and breasts

  3. DIABETES - A sugar free diet lowers the risk of diabetes and associated illnesses like obesity and high blood pressure. According to American Dietetic Association, sugar does not correctly cause diabetes, but excess of it, which is related to unhealthy eating habits.

  4. GENERAL WELL BEING - Sugar free foods add nutrients and necessary minerals to one’s body. This is because taking more sugar than the body’s requirement contributes to nutritional deficiencies. For instance, soft drinks displace certain minerals in milk. Sugar has the ability to deplete the absorption of certain minerals (like calcium, magnesium, etc) and vitamins (like vitamins C and D) which are needed in then body. Calgovit Calcium is a great supplement with Vitamin C and Vitamin D added to it, because Vitamin D aids and regulates the absorption of calcium in the body while Vitamin C will boost the immune system.

  5. DETOXIFICATION - Non-sugary foods like protein, detoxify your body, reignite your metabolism and get you satisfied for a longer time. Sugar free food allows one to get more satisfaction from food. Sugary foods hardly get any full or satisfy. There is always this “never okay” or “never full” feeling with sugary foods – it keeps you always wanting to get more.

  6. IMPROVED BRAIN FUNCTION - Sugar free diet improves the functioning of the brain. Studies have shown that eating sugary diets can harm the brain function and also reduce the amount of proteins that are necessary for memory and responsiveness. Studies have shown that a diet high in sugar reduces the production of a brain chemical called Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). The BDNF helps us to form new memories and remember or learn new things.

The negative impacts of sugar on the health of humans have been studied, and it has been observed that sugar is not a great ally to human health because of the potency that it has to cause issues like obesity, high blood pressure, tooth cavity, nutritional deficiencies, poor brain performance, etc.
